On Tuesday, January 9, the Federal Ministry of Education started an inquiry into degree fraud at domestic and international private colleges. Over the course of eight weeks, an interministerial committee comprised of seven members will investigate.
The committee has been charged by Prof. Tahir Mamman, Minister of Education, with investigating any ministries, departments, or agencies (MDAs) and their employees who may have assisted in the acquisition and verification of forged certificates.
The committee includes, among others, Yusuf Tuggar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, the Minister of Youths, and Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
The committee’s assessment of private institutions founded in the last 15 years is one of its main responsibilities. This entails assessing their staffing (full-time, contract, adjunct, visiting, and other positions), infrastructure, management structures, and program funding.
Although the National Universities Commission (NUC) regularly carries out accreditation processes, this extra examination attempts to guarantee compliance with particular standards.
The inquiry focuses on the 147 private universities that are presently in operation in Nigeria, 107 of which were founded in the previous 15 years. Below is a list of all 107 universities that the federal government will be looking into.
