A 76-year-old man named David Ogunsanwo was arrested on Saturday, according to Mrs. Adijat Adeleye, the Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development. He is suspected of raping and impregnating a 16-year-old girl (names withheld).
Ogunsanwo was allegedly taken into custody by Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps personnel in the state capital of Abeokuta.
Speaking to reporters in Abeokuta on Saturday, Adeley revealed this information and stated that her ministry will follow through to guarantee that justice was done. She also stated that the suspect would face charges in court.
The commissioner urged victims to always come forward and voiced concerns about the rising number of sexual abuse cases in the nation.
Adeleye said, “The incidence of people going to the police, reporting and withdrawing the case is increasing. And we want to draw the attention of all parents, that if their child is a victim of violation, report the case to the police and do not withdraw it.
“We are aware that cases of violation and abuse are increasing. There’s a huge increase in these kinds of crimes, especially against children.
“When you withdraw the case, it gives the perpetrator the opportunity to continue to do it and also do it to other children.”
