Nigerian Man Seeks Guinness World Record for Most National Grid Collapses in a Year

A Nigerian man has sparked an online frenzy after filing an application with Guinness World Records, aiming to have Nigeria recognized for the most national grid collapses in a single year. This request comes amid a wave of frequent and frustrating power grid failures across the country, which have drawn public criticism and calls for improvement.

Taking to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), the man shared an image of his formal letter to Guinness World Records. In the letter, he humorously but pointedly highlighted the persistent power issues affecting Nigerians, suggesting that the nation’s ongoing struggles with electricity supply deserve global acknowledgment.

The post quickly went viral, with Nigerians and others reacting to the creative yet critical approach to drawing attention to the country’s power challenges. Many viewed the application as a call for action, using humor to emphasize a widespread issue that has impacted businesses and daily life across Nigeria.

In his message, he wrote:

“Dear @GWR,”

“APPLICATION FOR THE RECORD OF THE MOST NATIONAL GRID COLLAPSES IN A SINGLE COUNTRY.”

“I am writing to formally request that Nigeria be recognized and awarded a world record for the most collapses of a national electricity grid.”

“As of this year, Nigeria’s national grid has experienced an unprecedented 11 collapses, with a strong possibility of reaching a dozen within the next two days.”

“This frequency… an approximate 90% chance of collapse every two days… establishes a unique global precedent. We believe this remarkable statistic deserves official recognition.”

“Additionally, Nigeria stands out as the only nation to form a committee on national grid collapse—another potential record. Each failure is documented publicly by the official National Grid account on X, making this achievement ‘officially amazing.’”

“As a proud Nigerian and applicant for this record, I respectfully request the exclusive right to receive this recognition on behalf of the country. This honor can remain with me until another Nigerian applies in the future, as the grid’s instability is almost a sure bet.”

“Thank you for considering this application. I look forward to your response.”

“Sincerely,”

“General Snow.”

Following his post, commenters flooded the page, sharing their reactions and thoughts on his unusual application.

Reacting to the post:

@pointzero_088: “As much as I do t line the power outages and strongly believe a lot more can be done to remedy the situation, it is extremely disrespectful to Nigeria to do this. We have to stop this kind of stunt, please.”

@onlyonejega: “As a Nigerian that have lived for more than 25 years, I’m in full support of mr @generalshow_ As a matter of fact to back up is claim i can say I’ve never experienced a month straight full electricity supply. Many more to say but we really deserve this award.”

@RamotuOlaniyi: “Your president never told you he would give you electricity. Somebody went to Kano and said he wanted to dance and you’re expecting much from him.”

@JpChidiOkoye1: “The current minister of power in Nigeria is useless man. Zero brain.”
