The National Innovation Visa (subclass 858) is a permanent visa intended for highly talented persons who have achieved extraordinary results in their area.  It is an invitation-only visa, which means that applicants must first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and receive an invitation from the Australian Department of Home Affairs before applying, according to the DAAD Scholarship.

This visa is available to people from a variety of sectors, including

• Entrepreneurship and Investment
• Achievements in academia, sports, and professional excellence.

Eligibility criterion for visa

Applicants for the NIV 2025 must meet many major conditions.  They must:

• Be nominated by an individual or organisation with a national reputation in the relevant sector, such as an Australian permanent resident, Australian citizen, or New Zealand citizen.
• Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and get an invitation to apply for a visa.

There are no age restrictions, although applicants under 18 and over 55 must demonstrate special benefits to Australia.  Those aged 18 and up must also produce proof of functional English proficiency, or pay a second installment cost if they do not meet this criteria.

How to apply?

The application process for the NIV 2025 consists of many steps:

1. Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI): Applicants must submit an EOI via ImmiAccount, outlining their accomplishments and contributions, as well as supporting documentation such as awards and references.
2. If successful, candidates will receive an invitation to apply along with a unique reference. They must apply within 60 days of getting their invitation.
3. Submit the visa application: Applicants must submit online through ImmiAccount and attach all required documents, including evidence of achievements and nomination.
4. Health and character checks: Applicants must submit medical records and police clearance certificates.
5. Visa decision: If approved, the applicant will be awarded permanent status in Australia.

The visa application fee begins at AUD 4,840 for the primary applicant.  Additional fees apply for family members listed on the application, and those aged 18 and older who do not speak English fluently must pay a second installment charge.

Bring family members to Australia

Applicants for the NIV may include family members in their applications.  This includes partners (spouse or de facto), dependent children under 18, and parents (if the primary applicant is under the age of 18).  All family members must meet certain health and character standards.

What to know:

The Global Talent Visa expired on December 6th, 2024.  The National Innovation Visa for 2025 is now accepting applications.  Once invited, applicants must submit their visa application within 60 days.
