Stan Alieke Cautions Corper Against Social Media Influence Over NYSC Saga

  • Alieke highlights that corps members are classified as government employees.

Amid the ongoing conflict between Raye and the Nigerian government, lawyer Stan Alieke, formerly affiliated with Speed Darlington, has shared his perspective on the situation. He cautioned against the dangers of openly criticizing the government while serving in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

In a post on Instagram, Alieke emphasized that corps members are considered government employees and, as such, must adhere to employment regulations. These policies prohibit them from making certain statements against their employer—the government.

“A corp member is an employee of the government; you earn stipends from the government. So, as per employment policy, you are restricted from saying some things against your employer, which is the government. This is not just peculiar to the government; in some organizations, you are restricted from criticizing or making a public appearance against the organization. If not, you will be queried or fired,” he stated.

While Alieke admitted that the legality of these restrictions is open to discussion, he emphasized that “rules are rules, and once you sign up, you need to adhere to them.”

He cautioned Raye to remember this and not let social media sway her into making permanent errors.

“My candid advice to the NYSC girl is that she should know this fact and not let herself be misled by social media support. They can only use you for clout, support you to your doom, and then abandon you.”

Alieke also cautioned that being removed from the NYSC might lead to lasting effects, such as challenges in finding employment in Nigeria.

“If NYSC kicks you out, your options of getting some jobs in Nigeria are already limited, as some organizations won’t employ you without an NYSC certificate. For further clarification, she should read her NYSC handbook.”

Raye, a member of the National Youth Service Corps, gained attention after sharing a video where she spoke out against President Bola Tinubu’s government regarding the increasing cost of living. This video prompted NYSC officials to threaten disciplinary measures, igniting a discussion about free speech and the limitations placed on corps members.
