Renowned gospel artist and minister, Nathaniel Bassey, has expressed his disappointment following the Super Eagles’ underwhelming display during their World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe.
The match, held at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday, March 25, ended in a 1-1 draw, much to the frustration of Nigerian football fans. Victor Osimhen had given Nigeria the lead in the 75th minute with a powerful header, raising hopes for a victory. However, Zimbabwe’s Tawanda Chirewa dashed those hopes with a last-minute equalizer in the 90th minute.
Reacting to the outcome, Nathaniel Bassey, who is also the creator of the popular Hallelujah Challenge, took to social media to share his disappointment. Although the tweet has since been deleted, it was widely circulated, showing the gospel singer’s frustration with the national team’s performance.
He wrote,
“I’ve always said this, one of our problems is managing small success. You score just one goal, all of a sudden you think you have qualified for the World Cup. The Zimbabweans practically strolled from the midfield into the net unchallenged while we watched. Na wa. Now they’ll start calculating maths.”
Daniel Regha in a tweet, wrote:
“Nigerian players will give it their all in their respective clubs overseas, but barely put in the same energy and focus when it comes to representing the country. I don’t get it.”
Many other Nigerians also voiced their dissatisfaction, criticizing the Super Eagles for falling short in such a crucial qualifier and jeopardizing their chances of making it to the World Cup.
