“Afrobeats lacks motivation and positivity” – Buju Banton says

Famous reggae singer Buju Banton has expressed strong disapproval of modern Afrobeat and Reggaeton, claiming that these styles lack cultural depth and do not support African communities.

Banton expressed sadness that Afrobeat, even with its African background, has lost its ability to create real change, moving away from the revolutionary essence shown by legends like Fela Kuti and Lucky Dube. He also criticized Reggaeton for taking reggae influences without acknowledging their roots, pointing out that it has not respected the cultural importance of reggae music.

Banton shared his thoughts on his time in Africa, feeling let down that Afrobeat artists haven’t embraced reggae’s origins. Instead, they have chosen to follow different musical styles. He pointed out that even though Afrobeat and Reggaeton are popular worldwide, they don’t have the depth and emotion needed to truly reflect the challenges of African countries.
