Precious Mbajiorgu, a student from Anambra, has been crowned the top contender in the Nigerian visually impaired student category for the 2022 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination, which was organized by the West African Examinations Council.

At the WAEC Nigerian head office in Abuja, Mbajiorgu—who took the exam at St. John of God Secondary School in Awka—was named the category winner for her academic brilliance in spite of her physical disability.

Mbajiorgu, a native of Ihiala in Anambra State, is a first-year student studying guidance and counseling at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka.

She wrote nine subjects and did a fantastic job on them.

Mbajiorgu, who is now 21 years old, was in her final class at a primary school in Awada, close to Onitsha, when she developed glaucoma in 2008.

She then wasted a few years adjusting to her new condition, which led her to have to learn how to read with a Braille machine.

The enthusiastic Mbajiorgu, who intends to pursue a career in academia, dedicated her WAEC award to Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, the governor of Anambra State, in recognition of his dedication to high-quality education and his efforts to empower individuals with disabilities.

“Professor Soludo cares for all, and he is well-focused, not just brilliant,” she said.
