The Grammy Awards organisers generated a lot of discussion online when they rewarded South African artist Tyla for her song ‘Water.’
However, controversy occurred when the late Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s song ‘Water No Get Enemy,’ was played at the announcement.
Tyla’s ‘Water’ won the Recording Academy’s inaugural Best African Music Performance award, defeating prominent Nigerian hits such as Davido’s ‘Unavailable,’ Asake’s ‘Amapiano,’ Burna Boy’s ‘City Boys,’ and Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush.’
However, the jubilant moment transformed into bewilderment and disappointment as Fela’s immortal masterpiece resonated through the arena instead of Tyla’s sexually charged mid-tempo ballad.
Many criticized the organizers for what they deemed a “silly mistake” that overshadowed the significance of the award and disrespected the memory of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, a towering figure in African music history.
