Argentina World Cup Winner Bags 2-Year Ban for Doping

Alejandro Papu’ Gomez, the champion of the Argentina World Cup, has been suspended for two years after failing a drug test. It was believed that Gomez had taken his children’s sick syrup in the lead-up to the competition.

Gomez defeated France in the final via a thrilling penalty shootout to win the mundial in December of last year.

It was revealed, according to The Daily Mail, that Gomez had tested positive for a banned substance just before the 2022 World Cup began in November.

He blamed the failed test on taking his children’s sick syrup without consulting with Sevilla’s doctors after having a bad night’s sleep.

But this was not considered a good enough excuse to spare him from a ban.

He must now decide whether he wishes to appeal the verdict in an attempt to get his ban reduced or overturned.

Gomez’s contract with Sevilla expired in October, and he signed on as a free agent with Serie A team Monza. After two and a half years with the team, he won the Europa League the previous year.

Gomez is best known for his time at Atalanta between 2014 and 2021.

The winger helped the team qualify for the Champions League for the first time in its history with 252 games and 59 goals.

He fell out with manager Gian Piero Gasperini and quit the Italian team early in 2021.
