Chizzy Alichi, a Nollywood actor based in Asaba, has spoken out regarding the insufficient recognition of Asaba filmmakers by mainstream media, highlighting the financial constraints that hinder quality production.
In a recent interview with Hiptv, Alichi pointed out the lack of acknowledgment for Asaba actors within the broader Nollywood industry. She noted that filmmakers in Asaba tend to invest less in their productions compared to their counterparts in Lagos.
“The only difference I see here is maybe in the making of the movie. Lagos tends to take their time especially the use of props. There in Asaba, we believe in mass production as e dey hot. Nollywood is everywhere,” she said.
Alichi asserted that actors from Asaba enjoy greater fame, while also emphasizing that these lower-budget films are accessible to individuals from less privileged backgrounds who may not have the means to afford streaming services or cinema tickets.
“Most of the Asaba actors are more popular because they make the movie with a low budget. It goes to even the village women. Not everybody has time or money to come to the cinema but those epic movies; even the market women, the hawkers, the mechanics, can watch,” she added.
She ended by emphasizing the necessity for these filmmakers to enhance the standards of film production.
“The world has gone past that kind of movie, they need to step it up a bit,” she concluded.
