ASUU Offers Scholarship to 10 ABU Indigent Students

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has given ten Ahmadu Bello University Zaria destitute students a N2 million scholarship grant.

In an interview with reporters on Saturday in Zaria, Prof. Haruna-Mohammed Jibril, the union’s Branch Chairman, disclosed this.

In February 2018, Jibril announced that the union established a scholarship program for underprivileged students at all of its chapters during the National Executive Council meeting held at Gombe State University.

According to the program, the national union gave N200,000 to each of the two grant recipients to help the underprivileged student with their academic endeavors.

The ABU Chapter awarded two more scholarships to students from 2018 to 2022 after the chairman stated that the national union encouraged branches to imitate the gesture.

“This year, when we came back from our meeting at Kaduna State University, we briefed the congress and the congress approved the upward review of the grant to N1.6m,’’ he said.

He continued by saying that the N1.6 million for eight beneficiaries was on top of the N400,000 that the national body had originally allocated for two beneficiaries, making the total N2 million.

He went on to say that the reason the ASUU ABU Chapter decided to deliver the grant cash early to the recipients was because students had already started registering for the upcoming session.

He claims that the recipients are intelligent students who have previously struggled financially and have a minimum CGPA of 3.0.

Jibril reported that in addition to giving scholarships to deserving students, ASUU had given palliatives valued at N50 million to internally displaced people (IDPs) in northern Nigeria.
