AY Makun, a well-known Nigerian comedian, actor, and producer, has achieved great success with his new film, The Waiter, which has made over ₦300 million at the Nigerian box office.

As of January 16, 2025, it has grossed ₦302 million, solidifying its place as a top Nollywood film.

In its fourth week, it earned an additional ₦26.6 million, keeping its strong performance amid stiff competition.

Released on December 20, 2024, The Waiter swiftly caught the attention of viewers. It earned over ₦200 million within its first two weeks, totaling ₦218.6 million by early January.

These figures align it with other top Nollywood films, like Toyin Abraham’s Alakada: Bad and Boujee, which launched on the same date, and the record-setting Everybody Loves Jenifa, which has grossed more than #1.6 billion.

The movie centers on Akpos, portrayed by AY Makun, a man facing tough times who gets a short-term job as a waiter at the fancy Crystal Hotel.

His life changes unexpectedly during a major event led by the Minister of Poverty Alleviation, where a plan to help the less fortunate is revealed.

With a blend of humor, action, and touching scenes, The Waiter tells a compelling story that has struck a chord with viewers.

AY Makun’s rise from being a personal assistant to comedy icon Alibaba Akporobome to becoming one of Nigeria’s top entertainers is truly inspiring.

He has shown his talent in many areas of entertainment, including stand-up comedy and film production.

In addition to his achievements in Nollywood, AY created and stars in the popular Nigerian sitcom AY’s Crib, featuring well-known actors like Alex Ekubo, Venita Akpofure, Buchi Franklin, and Justice Nuagbe.

He is the mastermind behind AY Live, a leading comedy show in Nigeria that showcases top comedians such as Bovi and Helen Paul.

As the CEO of Corporate World Entertainment Nigeria, AY has grown his impact beyond television.

He also owns a well-known clubhouse and has played a key role in advancing stand-up comedy in Nigeria.

AY’s Open Mic Challenge has been crucial in uncovering and developing fresh comedic talent, solidifying his status as a pioneer in the industry.

Along with his accomplishments in film and comedy, AY has hosted important events, including the 2018 Golden Movie Awards Africa in Accra, Ghana, where he co-hosted with actress Joselyn Dumas.

His ability to switch between comedy, acting, film production, and event hosting demonstrates his adaptability and passion for the entertainment sector.

The film’s impressive revenue highlights a growing desire for quality Nigerian cinema, both within Nigeria and internationally.

As The Waiter continues to perform well at the box office, fans and industry analysts are looking forward to AY Makun’s upcoming works.
