Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has spoken out about the ongoing comparisons with South African singer Tyla.
This comes after both were nominated for the Best African Music Performance at the 66th Grammys, where Tyla emerged as the winner.
In her first interview with BBC Radio 1 Xtra, Ayra Starr expressed that she is not letting these comparisons harm her relationship with Tyla.
She referred to the South African diva as her “home girl” and her “G.”
She said, “Tyla is my homegirl, that’s my G. That doesn’t bother me at all. I don’t care about all of that. Less noise, more music.
Let’s support each other, like, why not, like afrobeats and African music is about to take over the world and we have to come together to be able to do that. There’s no need for comparisons.”
In other news, Nigerian gospel artist Tope Alabi talked about the rivalries in the gospel music industry.
She spoke at the “Celebrating Jesus 7.0” concert in Ibadan. Tope Alabi raised concerns about issues like jealousy, competition, and dishonesty among gospel singers.
She called for more unity and support, particularly between established artists and newcomers.
In her heartfelt speech, Tope Alabi urged her colleagues to think about their choices and what truly matters. She emphasized that their legacy and responsibility to God should be more important than their fame and achievements.
Tope Alabi’s message started a discussion about the values and practices in the gospel music industry.
