Yusuf Bako, 50, was found guilty by the Bauchi State High Court of raping a young girl inside a mosque on Aminu Street in the Bauchi city. Bako faces life in jail.
According to report, Bako confessed to the crime and was detained in 2020 for it. While the COVID-19 lockdown was at its worst, he was accused of raping a 4-year-old girl in the mosque. Regretfully, he had served two jail sentences for comparable rape offenses before, therefore this wasn’t his first offense.
The conviction was verified by Barrister Sha’awanatu Yusuf, the Director of Public Prosecution at the Bauchi State Ministry of Justice, in a Wednesday exclusive conversation with our correspondent.
According to Sha’awanatu, this ruling demonstrates the ministry’s dedication to protecting the legality of the state’s present VAPP Law and ensuring justice for rape victims.
The Director also requested that the Administration of Criminal Justice Act speed the state’s trial procedure for suspected rape cases, anticipating that this would lead to more convictions.
She urged guardians and parents to work with law enforcement in the prosecution of alleged rape perpetrators. Sha’awanatu bemoaned that “some parents hinder their children who are victims of rape from appearing in court and giving testimony.”
Notably, in 2022, Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed of Bauchi State enacted the VAPP Law, which imposes life in prison and the death penalty on convicted rape suspects.
