“Being rich will not give you a benefit in the music industry”- Singer Lojay

  • Lojay stated that the common belief that wealthy individuals have an advantage in the music industry is not true.
    • He explained that it can actually be harder for those from rich families to succeed in Nigeria.
    • The artist mentioned that he is a unique case, as his talent stands out even though he comes from a wealthy background.

Singer Lekan Osifeso Junior, known as Lojay, stated that the common belief that wealthy individuals have an advantage in the music industry is not true.

He explained that it can actually be harder for those from rich families to succeed in Nigeria because people often make fun of them.

In a recent interview with City 105.1 FM in Lagos, the artist behind ‘Monalisa’ mentioned that he is a unique case, as his talent stands out even though he comes from a wealthy background.

“Nigerians like rich-shaming. It’s not limited to just the music industry. Once they feel like you have an edge… It’s funny because rich kids don’t have an edge. If anything, they come into the music industry on the back foot because people feel they are already rich and don’t deserve much support,” he said.

The Interviewer asked: “Did you ever experience that?”

Lojay replied: “I’m undeniably talented. They can’t try that with me. Let them challenge me on the mic.

“Mine was an inevitable situation. I heard myself before I decided to be an artist. I didn’t deceive myself. I have never done payola. My parents didn’t use their wealth to influence people to accept my music. My rich background has not influenced my career positively. If anything, being from a rich home is a disadvantage in the music industry.”
