David Jason Muir is a journalist from the United States who anchors ABC World News Tonight and co-anchors ABC News magazine 20/20 both which are part of ABC television network’s news division based in New York City.
Muir was the weekend anchor and principal backup anchor for ABC’s World News Tonight till Diane Sawyer took over on September 1, 2014. Muir has received multiple Emmy and Edward R. Murrow honors for his local, national, and international reporting for ABC News.

David Muir: Education
After completing his senior year at Onondaga Central Junior-Senior High School in May 1991, he enrolled at Ithaca College, where he graduated in May 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts in journalism. Throughout high school, he worked as an intern at WTVH-TV in Syracuse. An instructor who told Muir he had “the cut of a TV newsman” inspired him when he was a student. He studied political journalism for a semester at the Fund for American Studies Institute at Georgetown University and abroad for a second semester at the University of Salamanca in Spain with the Institute for International Education of Students.

From 1994 to 2000, Muir worked at Syracuse, New York’s WTVH-TV as an anchor and reporter. After Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated in 1995, Muir won top honors from the Radio-Television News Directors Association for his reporting from Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Israel, and the Gaza Strip. The Associated Press honored Muir with prizes for Best Television Interview and Best Enterprise Reporting. The Syracuse Press Club recognized Muir as the “Best Local Newscast Anchor” and one of Syracuse’s “Best Local News Anchors.”.
From 2000 to 2003, Muir worked as an anchor and reporter for WCVB television in Boston. For his work tracking the September 11 terrorists’ movements, he received the National Headliner Award, the Associated Press Award, and the regional Edward R. Murrow Award. The Associated Press also praised his reporting and news anchoring.
Muir started working for ABC News in August 2003 as the host of the World News Now overnight news program. Additionally, he was named the morning anchor for World News This Morning on ABC News (previously known as America This Morning). In June 2007, Muir took over as the World News Saturday anchor. In 2006 and on occasion after, he co-anchored the news program Primetime. The program was renamed World News with David Muir when Muir took over as the weekend news anchor in February 2012. Muir has received covert credit for raising Sunday night broadcast ratings. In March 2013, Muir was given the opportunity to co-anchor ABC’s 20/20 with Elizabeth Vargas.
