A Federal High Court in Lagos has dismissed a fundamental rights lawsuit filed by Nigerian crossdresser Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, popularly known as Bobrisky, against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Bobrisky had sought N200 million in damages for alleged psychotic trauma and N1 billion from the National Assembly for the purported violation of his right to a fair hearing. Additionally, he requested an injunction to restrain the EFCC and the National Assembly from detaining or harassing him, as well as protection against being declared wanted.
The case stemmed from allegations made by social media influencer Martins Otse, who in a leaked audio recording accused Bobrisky of paying the EFCC N15 million to quash money laundering charges against him.
Justice Alexander Owoeye, in delivering the ruling, dismissed the case, stating that Bobrisky’s claims lacked merit and were not substantiated by credible evidence.
The decision has since drawn reactions on social media, with many expressing mixed views about the outcome.
“Having evaluated the evidence placed before this Court by the Applicant, it is evident that the Applicant has failed to provide credible evidence to justify the award of the declaratory and injunctive reliefs sought by him.
“I hold that the claims of violation of fundamental rights against the 1st and 2nd Respondents were not made out of the affidavit evidence placed before this Court.
“The Applicant’s claims against the 1st and 2nd Respondents lack merit and are accordingly dismissed,” the judge stated.
Justice Owoeye also denied Bobrisky’s request for damages against the EFCC, concluding that the allegations of rights violations were not substantiated.
The EFCC’s spokesman, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the ruling in a statement on Friday.
