BornoMassacre: Senate Insists Buhari Sacks Service Chiefs.
The President, Muhammadu Buhari for the third time this year has been called on by the Nigerian Senate to sack the service chiefs as the nation’s security situation worsens.
The senate came to a decision following a motion raised by former governor of Borno State, Senator Kashim Shettima.
The Senate pointed out that the service chiefs have failed to secure Nigerians, adding that they should have them replaced with immediate effect.
The Red chamber also asked President Buhari to order an investigation into the allegations of corruption and financial leakage leveled against some top hierarchy of the military.
The lawmakers as the president to negotiate with the nation’s neighboring countries for multinational cooperation in order to strengthen the war against insurgency.
The Upper Chamber recommended the recruitment of 10,000 civilian JTF to complement the efforts of the armed forces and explore a multilateral partnership with Niger, Chad, and Cameroon.
It directed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, NEMA and NEDC to provide succor and psychological support for the families of the victims.
The Senate also sought proper welfare for soldiers at the war front and proper resettlement and support for the families of the fallen soldiers.
Recall that Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, had in an interview with Arise TV, said Buhari keeps the service chiefs as long as he is satisfied with their performance.
He said:
“I am not aware that the tenure of service chiefs is subjected to any law or regulation that is clearly stated. They serve at the pleasure of the president and (if) the president is satisfied with their performance, he keeps them. The buck stops on his table —with due respect to the feelings of Nigerians.
“The clamor for the sack is out of place considering that the president is not subject to the opinion of opposition political party which has clamored for this all the time. It is entirely his own determination; he decides who he keeps as his service chiefs and for how long.”
