BREAKING: Nnamdi Kanu Remains In imprison As Supreme Court Upholds Federal Govt’s Appeal

On Friday, the Supreme Court overturned the Court of Appeal ruling that had ordered Kanu’s release thereby upholding the federal government’s appeal

According to the ruling, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), will remain in Custody.

The apex court mandated that he appear in person at the Federal High Court in Abuja to answer to his seven terrorism-related charges.

The Supreme Court set the date in October after the federal government’s and the imprisoned IPOB leader’s attorneys adopted their final briefs of argument,

The appeal’s attorney, Chief Mike Ozehkome, SAN, requested that the court order his client’s immediate release from custody in addition to imposing harsh and punitive fines on the Federal Government.

However, Tijani Gazzali, the federal government’s attorney, urged the supreme court to uphold his modified brief of argument, which he filed on May 3, 2023.

He begged the court to grant FG’s appeal, overturn the Court of Appeal’s ruling ordering Kanu’s release, and enable his trial on terrorism-related charges to resume before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Gazzali also pleaded with the Supreme Court to reject Kanu’s cross-appeal.

The Court of Appeal Abuja issued a ruling on October 13, 2022, directing Kanu’s release from custody.

The court ruled that he was kidnapped, mistreated, and “illegally moved” from Kenya to Nigeria in order to stand trial for treason and acts of terrorism.

As a terrorist organization, IPOB has been outlawed in Nigeria by the government, which claims that the group is inciting ethnic strife by accusing the Igbo people of genocide.
