According to Orji Uzor Kalu, the former president handed over the peninsula, which is rich in hydrocarbon, to Cameroun, so as to be seen as a peace-loving leader, in order to earn the Nobel Peace prize or get the position of United Nations secretary general. He added that the probe will uncover Obasanjo’s real motive, as well as demand the return of the area to Nigeria.
“Former president Obasanjo’s recent and ongoing criticism of president Buhari is typical of his lack of patriotism and enviable degree of selfishness.
“When we point a finger at an innocent man, we ought to be reminded that there are three other fingers pointed at us.
“Is Obasanjo not the same man who traded away Bakassi to Cameroon all for selfish reasons as he was negotiating a Nobel Peace prize for himself or an appointment as the UN secretary general?
“Bakassi has the largest deposits of hydrocarbon found in any contiguous location in Nigeria today, yet, Obasanjo gave away our collective wealth just to please the international community and in the process secure for himself a Nobel Peace Prize and or the Secretary General position of the UN.
“President Buhari should, without delay, investigate Obasanjo’s role in the Bakassi ‘give away’ and demand its return to Nigeria,” Kalu said.
The Paramount Ruler of Bakassi and Chairman of Cross River Traditional Rulers’ Council, Etiyin Etim Edet, had also before now accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo of subjecting the people of the community to untold hardship after he ceded the Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon.
Edet said Obasanjo ceded the land to them without making adequate plans for the proper resettlement of the people. He said that single decision had exposed them to untold suffering, which they were still facing 13 years after the handover.
