A Cambodian woman has been apprehended for attempting to murder another woman during a confrontation regarding her Nigerian boyfriend.
Major Khim Vanna, the Deputy Chief of the Russey Keo district police, reported that the suspect, Lim Sokleap, 30, who works as a croupier in a Sihanoukville casino, was arrested on Thursday, September 12, 2024, and subsequently brought before the Phnom Penh Municipal Court.
The victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, has been identified by authorities as a 27-year-old karaoke worker residing in the Phnom Penh Thmey commune of the Sen Sok district.
According to Major Vanna, at 12:30 AM on August 9, 2024, Sokleap visited her boyfriend, Chali, 35, on the eighth floor of a condominium in the Tuol Sangke II commune of the Russey Keo district.
The police investigation revealed that Sokleap and Chali had been in a relationship for three years but had been living apart, with Sokleap in Sihanoukville and Chali in Phnom Penh.
Upon entering Chali’s room, Sokleap discovered him with another woman, which incited her anger and prompted an assault.
“The suspect allegedly grabbed the victim’s hair and pushed her to sit on the sofa. Then, she grabbed a meat cleaver and threatened to stab the victim in her throat, but did not because the Nigerian man intervened,” Maj Vanna said.
He further noted that Sokleap allegedly demanded that the victim return her payment for engaging in sexual relations with Chali.
However, the victim asserted that she was also in a relationship with Chali.
Major Vanna indicated that after the assault and threats against the victim, Sokleap instructed her to vacate Chali’s room at midnight.
On August 11, police came across a video clip of the alleged assailant, Sokleap, circulating on social media.
In light of the video and following reports of the incident, police conducted an investigation, leading to Sokleap’s arrest at her residence on Tuesday of this week.
“Sokleap confessed to the offences but claimed that the victim had taken her Nigerian boyfriend from her,” he said.
