Nigerian artist Chike Ezekpeazu Osebuka, known simply as Chike, has stated that the top songs chart on Apple Music Nigeria is often tampered with. He claims that the Top 10 and Top 20 lists are regularly manipulated through paid promotions.
In an interview on the show Curiosity Made Me Ask, hosted by Bae U Barbie, Chike explained that artists can improve their chart rankings by paying for increased streams.
“Your Top 10 and Top 20 on Apple Music is rigged… Not all the time to be fair, but most times,” he stated, acknowledging some exceptions.
Chike mentioned that the push for visibility in the music industry has made artists and their teams spend money on chart placements to boost their exposure. In Chike’s words:
“Right now, if I want to be top 10 on Apple Music, I can tell my guys ‘okay please spend $30,000’ and we will go to top 10. But then it’s not real.”
Chike highlighted that while certain positions are achieved through hard work, many top roles are acquired through payment, often favoring artists who can spend a lot on promotion. He added:
“And don’t get me wrong, not everybody. But most times that’s actually what’s going on. So I’m not going to be spending to cancel against sometimes even people that have more money than me.”
