The Peace and Security Council of the African Union announced that it would meet today, Thursday, to discuss the military takeover in Gabon.
According to Al Jazeera, the leaders are considering how to react to the officers who ousted President Ali Bango and installed their own head of state in the most recent coup in West and Central Africa, which regional powers were unable to thwart.
The African Union issued a statement on X, formerly Twitter, that read, “Now – AU Peace and Security Council meets to discuss the situation in Gabon.“
The AU commissioner for political affairs, Bankole Adeoye of Nigeria, and Willy Nyamitwe of Burundi, who is currently in the rotating chair position, were listed as the meeting’s chairs.
The coup put an end to the Bongo family’s nearly 60 years in power and presented a new problem for a region that has been dealing with eight coup attempts since 2020.
Nigeria’s recently elected president called it a “contagion of autocracy”.
