In an interview made public on Monday, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, the country’s new prime minister, predicted that Niger will be able to withstand the sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
In an interview with the German television station Deutsche Welle, Zeine stated, “We think that even though it is an unfair challenge that has been imposed on us, we should be able to overcome it. And we’ll triumph over it.
Gistlover cites the sanctions that ECOWAS imposed on Niger after the coup on July 26 that saw the military usurp the democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum.
As a result of the sanctions imposed by ECOWAS, financial transactions, the supply of electricity, and access to Niger were all restricted, preventing one of the world’s poorest nations from receiving critical imports.
Zeine emphasized the significance of Niger’s ties with both Nigeria and the West African bloc while expressing optimism regarding a visit by a Nigerian delegation and discussions with ECOWAS.
He said, “We have a great interest in preserving this important and historical relationship and also in having ECOWAS work on purely economic issues first.
“Because the basic principle of solidarity is to work to enable all the states that belong to this union to be in a position to create the conditions for prosperity, and also to ensure that each of the countries benefits from the solidarity of the community.”
He also urged people to “trust the new authorities.
“We have focused our actions on serving them with complete integrity and competence.”
