Bishop Oyedepo Shares Testimony of Covenant University’s Fast Establishment

Bishop David Oyedepo, founder of Living Faith Church and Chancellor of Covenant University, has shared an extraordinary testimony about the establishment of his prestigious institution in a record seven months.

Reflecting on the divine process, Oyedepo emphasized that faith and divine guidance were central to the university’s swift development. The journey began with Covenant University receiving its operational license on February 12, 2002. Seeking God’s confirmation, Oyedepo prayed for clarity and received a direct response: “It is I.”

With this divine assurance, groundwork started on March 6, 2002. By October 21, the university welcomed its first batch of 1,500 students to a fully developed campus, complete with lecture halls, male and female hostels, and a comprehensive library—all without makeshift or temporary structures.

During the university’s dedication ceremony, Oyedepo symbolically surrendered the institution to divine leadership by prostrating before God, reaffirming his faith and commitment to the vision.

The testimony continues to inspire many, showcasing the power of faith, vision, and determination in achieving extraordinary milestones.

In his words:

“When we got the license to operate Covenant University, everybody was excited. Was I? I’m not sure. Because I asked the Lord, ‘Lord, tell me if it’s not Your university, I’m not interested. I’m not going to school anymore.’ And I heard Him say, ‘It is I.’”

“It is I” meant a lot. He spoke that on February 12, 2002. We began clearing the ground for the university on March 6. By October 21, 1,500 students resumed on campus. Two halls of residence—one for males, one for females—were ready, and all the buildings were fully completed. There was no lecture held outside the facility. The library and everything else were in place in just seven months. How many months? And there were no bungalows—everything was done properly, all within seven months, by His hand. “It is I.”

“Now, wait a minute. “The day we dedicated the university, He said to me, ‘Now hand it over to Me. Now come and see the hand of God.’ I asked, ‘How do I hand it over to You?’ He said, ‘Lay flat on this floor before Me.’ So I laid down before Him, before all the students, their parents, and church leaders. I was the maddest person there. I laid down before Him, and He took it over. Now, in 15 years, watch. Covenant University is today listed among the elite group of universities, which is only 1,002 in the world.”

“Out of 29,000 universities in the world, Covenant has jumped to the 1,000 realms. The hand of God in 15 years. Now, listen, I’m talking about Oxford. I’m talking about Harvard. I’m talking about Yale. I’m talking about that group of elite universities in 15 years. Watch it. The hand of God that engenders speed is coming on your life.”
