King Charles III has conveyed his admiration for Nigerian Pidgin English, attributing his newfound interest in the language to the influence of Afrobeats artist Davido.
“Davido has made me love Pidgin language. I would like to speak it when next I visit Nigeria. Thanks to Afrobeats, it’s becoming more popular around the world,” the British monarch reportedly stated.
These remarks follow the launch of his curated playlist, The King’s Music Room, on Apple Music, which includes Davido’s track Kante alongside songs from renowned artists such as Beyoncé, Bob Marley, and Miriam Makeba. This selection underscores his appreciation for the rich musical diversity within the Commonwealth.
This is not the first instance of King Charles engaging with Pidgin English. During his visit to Nigeria in 2018, he famously greeted the audience with “How you dey?” and commented, “We de try,” demonstrating his commitment to connecting with the local culture.
His enthusiasm for Afrobeats and Pidgin English signifies the increasing global impact of Nigerian music and language, further establishing Afrobeats as a significant presence in the international entertainment landscape.
