The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed that overcrowding at a charity event sponsored by former Ooni of Ife’s wife, Olori Naomi Silekunola, led to a tragic stampede that claimed 35 lives and left six others critically injured.
The incident, which occurred during a funfair at Islamic High School, Ibadan, on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, has prompted the arrest of Olori Naomi, the school’s Principal, Fasasi Abdulahi, and six other individuals.
Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, revealed in a statement on Thursday that the event was originally planned for 5,000 children but drew over 7,500 attendees, far exceeding the venue’s capacity. The police have intensified their investigation into the tragedy and assured the public that anyone found responsible will face the full extent of the law.
The stampede has triggered widespread reactions, with calls for stricter regulations on public events to prevent future disasters. Governor Seyi Makinde has pledged accountability, vowing to support the victims’ families and reaffirming the government’s dedication to ensuring public safety.
