A private vehicle driver was detained by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority after it was reported that he killed a bystander in Ogba, Lagos State.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority’s public relations officer, Adebayo Taofiq, revealed this in a statement that was provided to PUNCH Metro on Saturday.
In the statement, Adebayo stated that the preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of a white, unregistered Mercedes-Benz vehicle with the license plate CLA 250 overaccelerated and lost control, colliding with an uninvolved bystander who perished instantaneously.
The statement further stated that LASTMA officers apprehended the evading motorist after learning that the innocent bystander had perished in the crash.
The commander of the LASTMA rescue team, Akinola Ganiyu, confirmed that he was later turned over to police officers from Area ‘G’ Police Command, who were also present at the scene of the accident, for further investigation.
According to Ganiyu, the LASTMA Commander, “While the vehicle was immediately cleared off the road for free vehicular movement, members of the deceased family later came and removed the corpse.
The statement partly read, “Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) early today apprehended a reckless private car driver after killing an innocent passerby around Ogba, Lagos.
“The Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Mr Adebayo Taofiq, in a press statement released this morning, disclosed that the fatal accident happened around Yaya Abatan by College Road, Ogba, Ikeja.
“Mr. Adebayo confirmed that preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of an unregistered white ‘Mercedes Benz’ (CLA 250) car lost control as a result of overspeeding and hit an innocent passerby who died instantly.
“LASTMA personnel apprehended the driver while running away after he saw that the innocent passerby had died as a result of the accident.”
“LASTMA Akinola Ganiyu (Commander, Agege) Iju-Ifako axis, who led the Lastma rescue team, confirmed that he was later handed over to Police from Area ‘G’ Police Command, who were equally at the scene of the accident for further investigations.
“According to LASTMA Commander Ganiyu, “While the vehicle was immediately cleared off the road for free vehicular movement, members of the deceased family later came and removed the corpse.”
“The General Manager of LASTMA Mr Bolaji Oreagba, however, cautioned the motoring public to stop over speeding, obey road signs and speed limit while driving on the road, particularly at the ‘Ember Months’ period.”
