The Ebonyi State Police Command has reported the heartbreaking deaths of Chioma Obasi, sister of famous Afrobeats artist Patoranking, and her husband George Obasi, due to a gas explosion at their home in Abakaliki.
This unfortunate event took place recently, resulting in serious injuries for the couple.
Despite being treated at a hospital in Abakaliki, Chioma passed away five days later from her injuries, and George followed the next day.
Their three-year-old son, who was upstairs during the explosion, managed to escape unharmed. The police investigation suggests that a gas leak was the likely cause of the explosion, which was ignited by a spark when the door was opened.
There have been conflicting reports regarding the cause of the blast, with some suggesting it might have been an inverter battery explosion or even a deliberate dynamite attack. However, the police have refuted these theories, confirming that the explosion stemmed from a gas leak.
The community is in shock, with neighbors describing the sound of the explosion as resembling a bomb blast due to the significant damage inflicted on the building’s ground floor.
Police spokesperson Joshua Ukandu stated that initial investigations point to a gas leak as the probable cause, and the investigation is ongoing.
