93-year-old Robert Mugabe, who was expected to resign in a televised speech on Sunday night – but he left Zimbabweans stunned and avoided any mention of resignation during his rambling address, has finally succumbed to pressure of resigning, ending his 37 years in power.
In his official resignation statement he said: ‘I Robert Gabriel Mugabe hereby formally tender my resignation as President of Zimbabwe with immediate effect.’
MetroUK reports that wild celebrations was said to have broken out in parliament as impeachment proceedings were called to a close, the parliament’s speaker announced.
His impeachment process which began on Tuesday when Zimbabwe’s Parliament opened could have taken days to complete, with a defiant Mugabe initially refusing to step down.
