Rhissa Ag Boula, a former politician and rebel leader in Niger, has established the Council of Resistance for the Republic (CRR), an organization that stands in opposition to the military junta that took control on July 26.
This is the junta’s first internal challenge in this significant Sahel country. The CRR wants to free imprisoned President Mohamed Bazoum.
According to Ag Boula’s statement, “Niger is the victim of a tragedy planned by those tasked with protecting it.
The junta blocked access to both African and UN envoys amid stalled diplomatic efforts to undo the coup, and Mali and Burkina Faso, two coup backers, appealed to the UN to forbid military intervention.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will discuss possible coercive measures on Thursday, according to a previous report from Gistlover.
Ag Boula’s CRR aids ECOWAS and international organizations in their efforts to reestablish constitutional order in Niger.
Ag Boula is notable for playing a crucial part in prior Tuareg uprisings. Concerns for the junta may arise from his influence among the Tuaregs, significant figures in northern Niger’s politics and commerce.
The world community, which includes the U.S. Niger is a major producer of uranium, so ECOWAS members like Nigeria urged the junta to restore the previous civilian administration.
