On Sunday night, there was a loud explosion at the Rivers State House of Assembly building.
The event coincided with purported efforts by certain legislators to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara from office.
Information surfaced that around 9:25 p.m., a few people suspected of arson hurled an explosive into the complex, starting a fire in the structure.
Despite Grace Iringe-Koko, the state police command spokesperson, not being reachable on her cell phone, a senior police official verified the occurrence to our correspondent.
According to information obtained by our correspondent, several of the chamber’s properties were damaged.
Because of the delicate nature of the situation, the police officer begged to remain anonymous but stated that the incident was politically motivated.
“Yes it is true. The fire occurred around 9:30pm or so. But as we speak, it (the fire) has been put out by firefighters who arrived at the scene just in time. I think it has to do with politics,” he stated.
According to information obtained by our correspondent, certain state legislators have made plans to remove Eddison Ehie, the leader of the House, before Fubara can be removed.
It is alleged that the leader of the House has been impeding efforts to remove Fubara.
After visiting the Assembly at around 10:30 p.m., our reporter saw that approximately 17 security trucks and one armored personnel carrier were parked at the entrance and adjacent areas, indicating that the police and other security personnel had assumed control of the complex.
