Popular Nigerian cleric, Femi Lazarus, has defended his decision to charge $150 for his School of Ministry after facing criticism from singer Timi Dakolo. The controversy began when an Abuja-based pastor called out gospel artists for demanding high fees for their performances, a statement that did not sit well with Dakolo.
In response, Dakolo pointed out that Femi Lazarus also charges for his ministry school, sparking debates online about whether religious teachings should come at a cost.
Addressing a netizen’s inquiry about the fee, Lazarus explained that his ministry school operates like any other educational institution, where learning requires payment.
When a user, @Deeemaths, asked:
“But you charge $150 for your school of ministry? Please can you shed more light on it, sir? I thought it’s ministry?”
Femi Lazarus simply responded:
“Yes o, it is a school.”
His response has sparked discussions online, with people expressing divided opinions.
@asa.bigjoe remarked: “And there are free schools owned by private individuals 😃… These gospel artists have staff to pay and families to feed. It’s the same 6000 naira crate of eggs you all buy.”
@mr.agugua argued: “But God called you for free, why does someone have to pay to learn God’s teachings from you?”
@ozee.oma_ said: “Timi Dakolo needs to sit this one out!!”
@dorothy_chris13 defended the cleric: “People just want to argue and not understand! Pastor Femi should not respond anymore. We understand you, sir, and we love your teachings. More wisdom to you!”
Debate on Paying for Religious Education
The conversation has ignited a broader debate about whether ministry training should be free or come with a fee. While some believe spiritual teachings should be accessible to all, others argue that structured education requires financial commitment.
