A list of the 69 ongoing road and bridge projects in the South east, have been released by the Federal government (FG).
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who released a statement on the ongoing projects, disclosed that the 69 roads and bridges, which are spread across the five states in the South ast, are now in different stages of completion, thanks to the funding sourced by the present Administration from budgetary allocations, the Sukuk Bond and the Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund.
According to him, though the contracts for many of the roads were awarded before the advent of this Administration, they were either poorly funded or not funded at all, hence work on the roads has lingered.
The Minister who disclosed that the projects include the rehabilitation of the existing Niger Bridge as well as the construction of the 2nd Niger Bridge, said the government is also looking into the possibility of using a part of the recovered looted funds to fund the development of infrastructure across the country.
The FG also promised to publish the full list of the roads and bridges, as well as give a state-by-state breakdown of the total figure. This is coming after Mr Innocent Alumonah, Federal Controller of Works in Anambra disclosed that the project work at the Second Niger Bridge linking Asaba in Delta and Onitsha in Anambra is already 44.6 per cent completed. Alumonah told newsmen that the contracting firm, Julius Berger Nig. Plc. had also accomplished about 85 piles of 914 millimeter in diameter in different axis.
He said the contract for the early work stage four was awarded in October 2016 while work commenced in November 2017. According to him, an advance payment of N2.166 billion was made to the contractor out of the contract sum of N14.466 billion for the early work phase four. Alumonah said the early work stage four project had a life span of nine months starting from November 2017 to July 2018, noting that there would not be any interruption between stage four and the main contract.
