China called for dialogue in Gabon on Wednesday after military officers there ousted the country’s president, Ali Bongo, in the early morning hours.
Days after being chosen for a third term in office, Gistlover had previously reported that military officers had ousted Bongo.
On Gabonese national television, Gabon 24 television channel, military officers announced their decision to seize power.
All of the republic’s institutions, including the government, Senate, National Assembly, and Constitutional Court, were dismantled by the coup leaders.
China reportedly demanded of all coup participants to ensure President Bongo’s safety in response to the development, according to Al-Jazeera.
The foreign ministry spokesman, Wang Wenbin said, “We call on all sides in Gabon to proceed from the basic interests of the country and the people, resolve differences through dialogue, (and) restore normal order as soon as possible.”
Wenbin charged all parties to “guarantee the personal safety of President Bongo, and uphold national peace and stability.”
