Former Big Brother Naija contestant Tochi has sparked a significant debate by expressing his views on the impact of financial empowerment on women within the context of marriage.
In a recent post on his Instagram story, Tochi posited that a considerable number of women remain in their marriages primarily due to financial reliance.
He asserted that if each married woman were to receive N100 million to pursue their own ventures, a substantial portion would opt to exit their marriages.
His post read:
“If you give 100 married women N100 million each to go establish themselves, in two weeks, 95 will leave their marriage.”
This assertion quickly gained traction online, eliciting a variety of responses from social media users. While some resonated with his perspective, contending that numerous women tolerate unsatisfactory marriages due to financial limitations, others argued that financial resources alone do not determine the stability of a marriage.
A social media user @verapatrick reacted: “I think what he is trying to say is that most married women are treated so bad that if they have financial freedom they would rather be single.”
Another user @edafe_vanvic added: “A lot of meaning to that sentence, it also means many 95 percent of women are in marriages for survival purposes, they are in just to make someone else responsible for their financial lives 😂, add this to other meaning u know . If they finally become financially independent, they will no longer find marriage interesting 🤨, because to them the man would have nothing else to offer them 😂.”
