Gospel singer and pastor Marvin Sapp is facing criticism after a video surfaced showing him urging his congregation to raise $40,000 during a church service. The clip, which has since gone viral, captures Sapp emphasizing that the goal could be easily reached if attendees and online viewers each contributed a small amount.
In the video, Sapp addresses the congregation, stating that there are around 1,000 people in the church and another 1,000 watching online. He then encourages each person to donate at least $20, explaining that if everyone participates, they would collectively raise the $40,000 target.
“This is a small seed,” he tells the audience, reinforcing the idea that the contribution is manageable. Sapp then takes it a step further by challenging those seated closer to the stage to donate $100 each. To ensure participation, he instructs the ushers to shut the church doors, preventing anyone from leaving until the appeal is completed.
As part of his persuasion, Sapp shares a personal anecdote, saying that when his wife was alive, he could take her on a date for just $20, suggesting that the amount is not a financial burden.
The video has sparked mixed reactions on social media. Some supporters argue that church fundraising is a common practice and necessary for ministry operations, while critics claim the approach was forceful and inappropriate. Many have taken issue with the act of closing the doors, with some calling it a high-pressure tactic to secure donations.
Despite the backlash, Sapp has yet to respond to the controversy, leaving many to speculate about his intentions and the purpose behind the fundraising appeal.
He added, “Because, again, it costs to sit up here.”
