The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has announced that the newly constructed Edo Arena, which has a capacity of 6,000, will be named in honor of the globally recognized afrobeats artist, Rema.
This announcement was made during the groundbreaking ceremony for the project held in Benin City on Wednesday.
Rema, who was present in Benin for his homecoming concert at Ogbe Stadium, participated in the ceremony alongside the governor, where he laid the first block of the arena.
“It was a privilege to have our international music icon @heisrema with me for the groundbreaking of the 6,000-capacity Edo Arena. The venue, which will be named ‘Rema’s Dome,’ is situated at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road in Benin City,” stated Governor Obaseki in a post on X shortly after the event.
The Governor elaborated that upon its completion, the arena will serve as a venue for a diverse array of events, including concerts, national conferences, symposiums, and other significant gatherings.
He further noted that the arena is expected to draw more visitors to the state, providing them with an opportunity to engage with the rich culture and offerings of Edo, thereby generating employment opportunities for the youth.
Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, hails from Benin City and has consistently represented Edo State, showcasing the state and the heritage of the ancient Benin empire through his music and performances.
His recent hit, ‘Benin Boys,’ featuring fellow Edo-born artist Shallipopi, serves as a tribute to the city of Benin.
