- Financial adviser GehGeh claims the Grammy Awards exploit Nigerian artists like Davido and Wizkid to boost African viewership, rather than honoring their achievements.
- GehGeh argued that Grammy organizers strategically nominate Nigerian acts to generate interest but rarely reward them with wins after Davido’s loss.
- The Grammy is often given to indifferent artists, while genuine artists who truly seek recognition are often overlooked.
Self-proclaimed financial adviser GehGeh has ignited controversy with his assertion that the Grammy Awards exploit Nigerian artists such as Davido and Wizkid to enhance African viewership rather than genuinely celebrating their accomplishments.
In an Instagram video following Davido’s defeat at the 67th Grammy Awards, GehGeh contended that the organizers deliberately nominate prominent Nigerian artists to attract attention to the event, yet these artists seldom receive actual awards.
He posited that the Grammys are often bestowed upon those who show little interest in the accolades, while those who earnestly pursue recognition are frequently disregarded.
Furthermore, he claimed that the nominations of Davido and Wizkid primarily serve to engage Nigerian and African audiences with the ceremony.
In drawing parallels with other international musicians, he noted Drake’s decision to cease submitting his work and questioned the rationale behind Chris Brown’s inclusion in the Afrobeat category.
He partly said, “If you check the history of the Grammy, na people wey no really care about the award dey win. Once they know you are really obsessed with it, you go cry tire, you no go see am.
“Grammy is using Davido to market the award to Nigerians and Africans. They know Davido and Wizkid are a big force in the music industry, and their nominations make Nigerians anticipate the event. Why do you think Drake stopped submitting his songs? Why would they put Chris Brown in the Afrobeat category? To market the award to Africans.”
GehGeh also linked this trend to other international celebrities, including Nicki Minaj, indicating that she has been utilized in a comparable manner to attract attention to the awards without achieving a victory.
