Roberta Flack, the famous Grammy-winning singer and pianist known for classic songs like Killing Me Softly with His Song and The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, has died at 88 years old.
Her publicist announced that she passed away peacefully on Monday, February 24, 2025, with her family by her side.
Although the exact reason for her death was not shared, Flack had been struggling with ALS since 2022.
She was born on February 10, 1937, in Black Mountain, North Carolina, and spent her childhood in Arlington, Virginia. Her mother, who played the organ at church, sparked her early interest in music.
She started playing the piano when she was nine years old and later received a full music scholarship to Howard University, graduating at the age of 19.
Flack began her career as a music teacher before moving on to perform at local clubs in Washington, D.C.
Her path to stardom kicked off at Mr. Henry’s Restaurant on Capitol Hill, launching a career that would achieve record-breaking success and make a significant mark on the music industry.
With her heartfelt voice and original style, she gained critical recognition and won multiple Grammy Awards.
