Afrobeats artist Rotimi has shared the reasons behind his departure from 50 Cent’s record label, G-Unit.
He explained that his exit was primarily due to a lack of understanding from the label’s leadership regarding his musical style. At the time of his signing, afrobeats had not yet achieved mainstream recognition in the Western music scene.
In a recent interview with Adesope Live, Rotimi stated, “I was signed to G-Unit, but then in 2017/2018, Afrobeats was not mainstream in the United States. Davido and Wizkid had records that were gaining traction in Boston, New York, but it wasn’t mainstream at that time.
“Afrobeats was big in the States, but they weren’t following it in LA. So, 50 Cent and I had a conversation. He was like, ‘What’s this sound you are trying to do?’ I said, ‘Bro, it’s Afrobeats.
“I have a record called ‘Love Rhythm’ and it’s going to blow up. But if you don’t understand what it is, then I have to go somewhere else.’ He let me out of my deal because we disagreed on the creative process, Afrobeats.”
Rotimi further noted that he subsequently became the first afrobeats artist to collaborate with Empire, a label that recognized and supported his artistic vision.

The Dem Mama artist highlighted the importance of open communication in his relationships, as he prefers not to harbor unresolved issues.
He explained, “If you have a problem with me , let’s talk about it because I don’t like going to bed thinking about things , I go die o. I don’t like anything to bother me at all.”
Regarding his role as a father, Timaya mentioned that his children reside with their respective mothers, yet they maintain a strong and affectionate relationship.
He explained, “Being a father is stressful because I love them too much but it’s enjoyable. My four kids live with their mothers so when I want to see them, I ask their mothers and they come to my house and we spend two to three months together then they go back to their mother’s. Christmas is coming and they’d spend it with me as well, but their mothers don’t come because they’re in relationships. We’re all fa
