Several players and officials were injured and received first aid at a nearby facility.
The passing of Coach Obi, a former Nigerian youth international goalkeeper, has brought sadness to the team.
He was 57 and had a notable career, including playing for Nigeria in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul.
“The accident happened at Umunna close to Okigwe still within Imo State,” Heartland FC revealed in a statement.
“The vehicle, in its attempt to dodge an oncoming vehicle, collided with another carelessly parked vehicle from another accident.”
