Armed soldiers are holding Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his family hostage at the Government House in Port-Harcourt.

This distressing situation arose just after President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers due to a serious political conflict.

The conflict, led by lawmakers loyal to Nyesom Wike, has escalated rapidly, leading to impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara.

Wike had a major role in Fubara’s election in 2023, despite facing allegations of corruption. After the president’s announcement, soldiers quickly blocked all access to the Government House, trapping Fubara and his family inside.

According to People’s Gazette, when they attempted to gather their belongings to leave, the soldiers refused to let them, restricting all movement in the area. An official present at the scene told The Gazette on Tuesday

“We are being held hostage. They said they don’t have instruction to let anyone leave the premises.”
