Nigerian artist Mr. May D recently disclosed that he missed a significant opportunity to collaborate with the renowned American musician Akon, a chance that was also extended to the Nigerian duo PSquare.
In a discussion on the well-known ‘Honest Bunch’ podcast, hosted by Nedu Wazobia and his team, May D shared insights about this experience and its repercussions on his career.
May D explained that PSquare initially had no intention of signing him but chose to support him in gaining visibility within the music industry, similar to their assistance for other artists like Jay Martins.
During this time, Akon, who was an admirer of May D’s popular track “Chop My Money,” expressed interest in a collaboration. However, he stipulated that the music video must be filmed in the United States and made it clear that his participation was contingent upon May D traveling to the U.S. for the shoot.
May D recounted that while in the U.S., Akon invited him to his office and inquired whether he had any formal agreement with PSquare. After May D confirmed that he did not, Akon presented him with several potential deals, even offering to cover the cost of May D’s return flight to America to secure the opportunities available.
In an unexpected turn of events, May D decided to share Akon’s proposal with PSquare, believing it was the appropriate course of action. Reflecting on this choice, he remarked, “If I had known better, I wouldn’t have disclosed it to them.”
Unfortunately, his openness appeared to cost him the chance to collaborate with Akon.
