A Nigerian woman living in the United Kingdom has described how saying’sorry’ for everything almost got her into serious trouble.
The young woman known as progressoberiko described her experience with cultural shock while traveling abroad.
She described how she bought a product that wasn’t sealed but had to return it because she had another one at home.
When she returned it to the shop while the receptionist was typing something into the computer, the Nigerian lady said, “I’m sorry for any inconveniences.”
She said that this caused the receptionist pause, and she asked, sternly, whether the Nigerian lady had truly not used the product, and if not, why was she apologizing.
The Nigerian lady advises compatriots not to always reel out sorry every time as this tends to make it seem as if they’re guilty of something.
