“I am an Igbo man” – Jamaican reggae artistes, Buju Banton asserts

  • Jamaican reggae legend Buju Banton has revealed his Igbo heritage.
  • Banton revealed on the ‘Drink Champs’ podcast that his Maroon tribe, originally from Nigeria’s Igbo tribe, originated in the country.
  • The Jamaican government is displacing Indigenous people by introducing Chinese and other foreigners into their region, causing concern and concern among the indigenous population.

Renowned Jamaican reggae artist Buju Banton has disclosed his Igbo ancestry.

    In a recent appearance on the ‘Drink Champs’ podcast, co-hosted by N.O.R.E and DJ EFN, Banton shared that his lineage, the Maroons, traces back to the Igbo tribe of Nigeria.

    He expressed concern over the encroachment of their ancestral lands, which he claims is being jeopardized by the present Jamaican government’s actions to introduce Chinese and other foreign entities into their territory, potentially displacing the local population.

    He said, “Our Indigenous way of life and our land are being threatened by the current government of Jamaica which seeks to bring Chinese and other nationalities into the Cockpit region which is an Indigenous sacred region to usurp us the Maroons as the warriors.

    “Maroons are some of the Indigenous warriors on my Island. We fought the British relentlessly. We are called Blackmaroons. My generation originated from Nigeria. I am an Igbo man according to my bloodline.”
