Well-known film director and supporter of the Directors Guild of Nigeria, Andy Boyo, has talked about being expelled from school due to the famous Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Fela, a Nigerian musician and political activist, passed away in Lagos in 1997 at 58 years old.
He is credited with creating Afrobeat, a music style that combines West African rhythms with American funk and jazz.
Boyo is now preparing to tell the story of this Afrobeats legend in a much-anticipated biographical film.
After three years of work, he has secured the music rights and plans to start filming in Nigeria, the UK, and the US in 2025.
Speculation indicates that the major film will include a wide cast, featuring 27 actresses as Fela’s wives.
Boyo, who has directed successful films like “Untamed” and “Spirit of Assassins,” will also be the director, writer, and producer of this biographical project.
Talking about his passion for Fela and the project he is involved in, Boyo remarked, “this project is a labor of love.”
Boyo said: “Fela has always been my passion, I was expelled from Glorious College, Ibadan, for sneaking out to watch him perform at the University of Ibadan’s ‘Havana Night.’ Fela was my mentor; I admired his personality and music. When I returned to the school, I got expelled from school.”
The film will showcase Fela’s life, struggles, and triumphs as the king of Afrobeats. With Boyo’s talent and dedication, this movie aims to change the landscape of cinema and push the boundaries of African film.
