Governor Kawira Mwangaza of Meru County, Kenya, has commissioned a Zebra crossing as part of his state’s quest to achieve city status.
A Zebra Crossing is a road sign that warns oncoming cars that pedestrians will be using that location to cross the busy road and that they should slow down when approaching.
Photos and video from the commissioning, which took place outside Meru National Polytechnic on Tuesday night, May 9, are making the rounds on social media.
The first-term governor, who was present with some members of her cabinet, stated that the measure will boost student and resident safety.
Mwangaza said; “We’re working day and night. I’ve commissioned a zebra crossing at Meru National Polytechnic, which has a population of about 10,000 students, in an effort to improve the safety of students and area residents of the highly populated area when crossing the busy Meru-Nanyuki highway.”
She further explained that a similar marking exercise had commenced at Gitoro Primary, Meru School, Meru Primary, County headquarters, Riverland and Gakoromone market to safeguard pedestrians.
The governor added. “We are on a mission of making our municipality safe in line with our dream of making Meru Municipality attain city status. I won’t rest until Meru is completely Happy”.
