Since new year, January 1st 2018, it is now considered an act against the law to pay men more than women in Iceland.
The country is the first in the world to make equal pay the law, following an announcement of the legislation on March 8th, International Women’s Day 2017.
Under the new regulation, organizations that employ more than 25 people are under obligation to acquire a government certificate showing their pay equality policies.
According to multiple reports. any company that does not comply with this new law will be made to face the wrath of the law.
“The legislation is basically a mechanism that companies and organizations … evaluate every job that’s being done, and then they get a certification after they confirm the process if they are paying men and women equally,” Dagny Osk Aradottir Pind, of the Icelandic Women’s Rights Association, says.
